This 4-week class is an introduction to the practice of mindfulness; training the mind to be awake and aware in the present moment. Mindfulness can help reduce stress, support healing and improve well being. The class will include practice, discussion and suggestions for integrating mindfulness into our busy lives. You do not need any previous experience.

Mindful Eating: The Am I Hungry? Program

Now that the holidays are over, transform the way you think about food. Join us for this interactive and engaging 8-week mindful eating program. You will learn how to tune into your natural instincts to manage your eating in a mindful, healthy way – without restrictive diets or obsessing over every bite. During the program you will learn to:

  • Use hunger and satiety to guide your eating
  • Eat the foods you love without overeating or feeling guilty
  • Balance eating for nourishment with eating for enjoyment
  • Resolve mindless and emotional eating

Some reading is required. The workbook and book, Eat What You Love and Love What You Eat are included in price of the class.

Please note: There is no class on Feb. 14. 

Mindful Walking in Nature

Learn how to take a meditative walk in nature with mindfulness experts from MaineHealth’s Learning Resource Center. Explore the Blackstrap Hill Preserve’s trails while taking time to become more aware of your own body’s sensations and experiences in nature. Being mindful in nature allows us to reconnect to the present moment and can be the perfect antidote for all of life’s daily stressors.

We will be walking a 1.8 mile loop over moderate terrain. For the safety of participants and your pets, please leave all dogs at home.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Booster Class

This class is designed to provide ongoing support for anyone who has participated in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program or practiced Mindfulness in other ways but wants to learn more or refresh their practice. Using Tara Brach’s book, “True Refuge”, each of the 5 weeks will provide discussion, tools and opportunities for deepening your meditation practice and reducing stress.

Please note: Participants are responsible for providing their own copy of the book.

Taught by a certified MBSR teacher, instruction involves mindful meditation practices, discussion, gentle stretching and yoga (appropriate for all fitness levels).

Pain Relief the Holistic Way

Led by MaineHealth’s physician experts in integrative medicine, this class will provide an overview of a variety of alternative and complementary therapies which may supplement a more conventional approach to the treatment of pain. Examples of the therapies reviewed will include mindfulness for pain relief, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, and nutritional counseling.

Teaching Mindfulness to Children- Belfast

This class is held at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. It will be streamed live from the class in Portland.

Children can benefit from practicing mindfulness just as much as adults can! Join us to learn how a consistent mindfulness practice can help children build emotional regulation skills, focus, and empathy. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, rates of absenteeism, and increase cognitive performance in children.

This class will be helpful for parents, caregivers and teachers who care for children in grades pre-K through 12. Note: This class is not designed to have children attend and will not have childcare available. Please make other arrangements.
