Movie Night: Opioids in Maine- A Public Health Conversation
Join us to view two short documentaries about the opioid crisis from two perspectives, with a question and answer forum following. We will watch The Opiate Effect, created by Green River Pictures; the true story of Maine’s Will Gates, through the eyes of his loved ones, Senator Leahy, Attorney General Holder, and others. The second movie we will watch is The Opioid Effect: Maine's Fishing Community Battles with Heroin, created by VICE. It shares real stories of Maine fishermen and their families to show the effects that opioids have had on Maine’s fishing community. After that, participants will have the opportunity to learn real-life skills like:
- How to recognize when someone is having an overdose
- What to do if you find someone having an overdose
- How to store your medicines safely and how to dispose of your unused medication. These can protect your loved ones and your community.
Experts on hand:
- Kristen Silvia, MD
- Debra Poulin, LCSW, CCS
- Bridget Rauscher, PPS
Some scholarships are available. Please call 866-609-5183 if needed.
Vaping: The Target is Our Teens
with Panel of Specialists
In cooperation with the Scarborough Public Schools, MaineHealth is pleased to bring the public an informational class on the youth epidemic of e-cigarettes (also known as JUUL and vaping).
Join a panel of Maine experts for an interactive discussion on vaping and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Find out about what your teens likely already know about vaping and what young Mainers are telling our panelists about how they are using these products. You will also have an opportunity to see some of the most common devices, receive tips from a local high school substance abuse counselor on how to talk to teens about vaping and get the latest information on Maine law regarding ENDS and usage among Maine teens. Join us to get your questions answered so you can be better prepared to talk to the teens in your life.
